Why Do Round Tablecloths Have Seams? How 90”, 108”, 120” & 132” Round Tablecloths Are Made

If you’ve ever purchased a large round tablecloth and noticed seams running down the sides, you may have wondered: Why isn’t the tablecloth made from one solid piece of fabric?

The answer is simple: fabric width.

Many popular tablecloth fabrics are approximately 58 to 60 inches wide, while round tablecloths can measure 90, 108, 120, or even 132 inches across. Because the finished tablecloth is much wider than the original fabric, additional fabric panels must be professionally sewn to the center section.

This is a normal part of manufacturing large round tablecloths—not a defect.

Why Large Round Tablecloths Need Seams

Imagine starting with fabric that is approximately 58 inches wide.

A 58-inch-wide piece of fabric cannot create a 108-inch or 132-inch circle by itself. To produce the full round shape, additional sections of matching fabric are sewn along the sides of the center panel.

The finished pieces are then cut into the correct circular shape and hemmed around the edge.

This construction allows us to create beautiful oversized round tablecloths even when the original fabric is much narrower than the finished tablecloth.

90-Inch Round Tablecloth Construction

For a 90-inch round tablecloth, a large center section is used with additional fabric added to both sides to create the complete 90-inch width.

The seams run parallel to one another along the sides of the center panel.

Once placed on a round table, the center section covers the main tabletop while the seams generally fall toward the sides of the tablecloth.

Important: The exact panel dimensions can vary depending on the usable width of the particular fabric.

108-Inch Round Tablecloth Construction

For our example using 58-inch-wide fabric, a 108-inch round tablecloth can be constructed with:

25” side panel + 58” center panel + 25” side panel = 108”

The two seams connect the side sections to the main center section.

This creates the full width needed before the fabric is cut into a 108-inch circle.

120-Inch Round Tablecloth Construction

For a 120-inch round tablecloth using 58-inch-wide fabric:

31” side panel + 58” center panel + 31” side panel = 120”

Again, the seams run along the two sides of the center section rather than directly through the middle of the tablecloth.

On a properly dressed table, much of the seam area falls naturally into the draping portion of the tablecloth.

132-Inch Round Tablecloth Construction

The same principle applies to an even larger 132-inch round tablecloth.

Using 58-inch-wide fabric:

37” side panel + 58” center panel + 37” side panel = 132”

This allows a standard-width fabric to become a very large round tablecloth suitable for full-length drops on many event tables.

Are Seams Normal on Round Tablecloths?

Yes. Absolutely.

Seams are a normal construction method for oversized round tablecloths made from fabrics that are narrower than the finished tablecloth.

This is especially important to understand when shopping online. A product photo may show a beautiful finished tablecloth, but customers may not realize that creating a 108”, 120”, or 132” circle from standard-width fabric requires multiple pieces.

The important factors are the quality of the sewing, proper placement of the panels, and how the finished tablecloth drapes on the table.

Will You See the Seams on the Table?

The seams may be visible, but their placement is designed to keep the large center portion of the tablecloth clean and attractive.

Instead of putting a seam directly through the center, the main fabric panel runs through the middle while the additional panels are attached along its sides.

Once the tablecloth is placed on a round table, the fabric begins to drape downward, making the seams much less noticeable as part of the overall folds and draping.

Patterns, texture, lighting, and the particular fabric can also affect how noticeable the seams appear.

Why Fabric Width Matters When Buying Tablecloths

Fabric width is one of the most important—and often overlooked—parts of tablecloth manufacturing.

For example, if a fabric is 58 inches wide, you cannot simply cut a 108-inch circle from it. The material physically isn’t wide enough.

Understanding this helps explain why two tablecloths of the same finished size can sometimes be constructed differently if they are made from fabrics with different widths.

Choosing the Right Round Tablecloth Size

The best tablecloth size depends on two measurements:

1. The diameter of your table
2. How far you want the tablecloth to drop

A simple formula is:

Table Diameter + (Desired Drop × 2) = Tablecloth Size

For example, if you have a 60-inch round table and want approximately a 24-inch drop:

60” + 24” + 24” = 108” round tablecloth

For a floor-length look, measure the height of your actual table and calculate the size using the same formula.
