What’s the Difference Between Chiffon and Voile for Backdrops?

Choosing between chiffon and voile fabric for a backdrop can make a big difference in how your setup looks. Both are popular for weddings and events, but they behave differently when used for draping.

Chiffon is a lightweight fabric that flows easily and creates a soft, elegant look. It works well when you want movement and a slightly sheer effect. Because chiffon is usually around 58–60 inches wide, you may need more panels to cover a larger backdrop.

Voile, on the other hand, is typically much wider, often around 118–120 inches. This allows you to cover more space with fewer panels. Voile creates a clean and full look, especially for larger backdrops or ceiling draping.

If you want a soft, layered design, chiffon is a great choice. If you want easier coverage and a more uniform appearance, voile is often the better option.

For most standard backdrops, the final look depends on how much fabric you use. Adding more panels creates a fuller and more professional setup, while using less fabric results in a flatter appearance.

Both fabrics are widely used by event planners, decorators, and DIY setups. The best choice depends on your setup size, design style, and how much fullness you want to achieve.
