How Many Yards of Fabric Do You Need for a Wedding Backdrop?

Planning a wedding or event backdrop and not sure how much fabric you need? This is one of the most common questions we get, and getting it right can save you time, money, and stress.

The amount of fabric you need depends on three things: the width of your backdrop, the height, and the type of fabric you choose.

For standard backdrop setups (like pipe and drape), most people use panels that are about 10 to 12 feet high. If you’re using fabric like chiffon or voile, which are lightweight and sheer, you will need more volume to achieve a full and elegant look.

For example, a 10-foot wide backdrop typically needs:

  • 2 to 4 panels for a light look
  • 4 to 6 panels for a full, gathered look

If you’re using wider fabrics like voile (118”–120” wide), you can cover more area with fewer panels. Narrower fabrics like chiffon (around 58” wide) will require more panels to achieve the same fullness.

For a more solid and non-see-through backdrop, interlock fabric is a great option. It provides full coverage, reduces the need for layering, and gives a clean, wrinkle-resistant finish.

If you’re working with fabric rolls (like 50 yards continuous pieces), you can cut them into panels based on your setup. Many event planners prefer pre-cut panels to save time and avoid waste.

📌 Quick Guide:

  • Sheer look (chiffon / voile): more panels needed
  • Full coverage (interlock): fewer panels needed
  • Wider fabric = fewer panels
  • More gathering = more fabric

🎯 Final Tip

If you’re unsure, always go slightly more rather than less. A fuller backdrop always looks more professional than a flat one.
